Chlorides Testing & Measurement
Ahh… that lovely sea air, great for holiday makers, not so great for steel structures. For the coating inspector, testing for surface chlorides is a regular task, particularly in coastal or marine environments. At BlastOne, we stock a range of kits and consumables for different chlorides testing standards and protocols. Some kits provide extraction and analysis, while others provide extraction of a sample for later analysis by an electronic instrument.
The results produced by BlastOne’s range of Chlorides tests will show either total salts or total chlorides. Total salts will include sodium chloride along with a range of other salts, not all of which are detrimental to coating life. Sodium Chloride is of particular concern because of it being bountiful in the natural environment and its power to damage. A high reading from an all-salts test may require validation with a chloride-specific test. The results of total salts tests can also be affected by extreme heat rendering the results inaccurate.

The Bresle method of testing surfaces for salt contamination is recognized by ISO and ASTM standards. The DeFelsko SST test probe is an easy and accurate way to conduct these tests. Test patches are required to perform them and DeFelsko has multiple options, as follows:
- PosiPatch™. This innovative product utilizes a reusable patch, held by a magnetic ring against the surface. Available in 2 configurations:
- Rigid ring. Preferred for flat surfaces or round surfaces with greater than 40 inch diameter.
- Flexible ring. Preferred for round surfaces between 4 and 40 inch OD, or a minimum of 4.5 inches ID.
- Saves time and money vs. disposable patches.
- Utilizes a plastic needle - no sharp hypodermic needles required!
- Latex Disposable. The conventional Latex Adhesive Bresle Method Patch has a sample test volume range of up to 15 ml (the only DeFelsko version with this range) for applications where the spec requires this.
- Latex-Free Disposable. Similar to latex disposables but lower in cost, the DeFelsko Adhesive Bresle Method Patch is suitable when the 15 ml sample size of the latex version is not required.

Tests available that include both extraction and analysis components are the BresleSampler, Chlor*Test and SCAT Test. The BresleSampler and SCAT are similar – both measuring total salts. The BresleSampler uses a self-adhesive patch with injected with deionized water and then extracted from the test surface for analysis. The BresleSampler kit uses a titration liquid to measure the level of total salts. The SCAT test swabs deionized water over the test surface for later analysis by titration strips for levels of total salts. The Chlor*Test uses a self-adhesive test sleeve contained deionized for later analysis by titration tube for total chlorides only.
DeFelsko and Elcometer both manufacture gauges that electronically analyze test solution for total salts. The DeFelsko Soluble Salt Tester (SST) probe and the Elcometer 130 meter. Sample collection uses either a Bresle patch or DeFelsko’s proprietary patch or their magnetic ring system.
There is also a Chlor*Test abrasive test. This tests for chlorides in your blasting media. Chlorides are sometimes found in blasting media because of the abrasive being mined in a coastal location, salt water used for quenching in processing slag based media or uncleaned recycled media.
