Coating Film Thickness Measuring Gauges, Probes, & Instruments

The Blast-One™ range of Coating Inspection Gauges, Probes, & Instruments & Kits facilitate for every type of Coating Inspector – Protective Coating, Industrial, Marine, etc. Three ‘off the shelf’ kits are available – will suit a diverse range of inspection applications, including coating thickness measurement, wet film thickness, dry film thickness, dew point measurement, relative humidity measurement, surface profile gauge (SPG) etc.

Coating film thickness measuring instruments, also known as paint thickness gauges, are used to measure the thickness of coatings on various surfaces. This is important for a variety of reasons, such as ensuring that the correct amount of coating has been applied, detecting corrosion, and determining the condition of a surface.

There are two main types of coating thickness measuring gauges, probes, and instruments: magnetic and ultrasonic. Magnetic gauges are used for ferrous metals, while ultrasonic gauges are used for both ferrous and non-ferrous metals.

Magnetic gauges work by measuring the magnetic field that is created by the metal substrate. The thickness of the coating is then calculated based on the strength of the magnetic field.

Ultrasonic gauges work by emitting ultrasonic waves and measuring the time it takes for the waves to travel through the coating and the substrate. The thickness of the coating is then calculated based on the speed of the ultrasonic waves.

There are a number of factors to consider when choosing a coating thickness measuring instrument, such as the type of material you are measuring, the thickness of the coating you want to measure, and your budget.

  • The PosiTector UTG - DeFelsko's solution for measurement of wall thicknesses of pipes, tanks, and more where access is limited to one side.  Here are some highlights of the highly capable DeFelsko ultrasonic thickness gage probe family:

    • Familiar.  The UTG family of probes are interchangeable with the tried-and-true DeFelsko gage body platform.
    • Capable.  Six different probe versions are available, depending on the requirements of the application.  The first four are standard corrosion single-echo probes designed for applications where the surface is unpainted (or has the paint removed.)
      • PRBUTGC:  Standard frequency 5mz transducer. Cabled.
      • PRBUTGCX:  Xtreme version of above with a braided stainless cable with strain relief for demanding use.
      • PRBUTGCA:  Same as above, except integral  non-cabled design. This version is ideal for one-handed use.
      • PRBUTGCLF.  Low-frequency 2.25mz transducer for attenuative materials like cast iron.  Standard cable.
    • The following two models are both cabled, and can be used on either painted or non-painted substrates.
      • PRBUTGM:  5mz transducer with highly versatile single and multi-echo modes.  Single mode offers greater (up to 5 inches thick) measurement range, but should be used where paint has been removed.  Multi-echo mode does not require the paint to be removed and can measure walls up to 2.5 inches thick.  This version has a durable alumina wear face and is ideal for use on rough or blasted surfaces.
      • PRBUTGP: 15mz transducer offers high precision when measuring thin materials (up to .475 inch thick steel or up to .175 inch thick plastic).  It has automatic single / multi echo mode switching for use on painted or unpainted surfaces.  This probe can be used to measure thicknesses of plastic bottles, aircraft windows, thin-wall pipe, and much more.
    • Configurable.  Any of the six probes can be configured in the following packages:
      • Probe only.  Use with your existing PosiTector gauge.
      • Standard PosiTector package with choice of probe.

Wet Film Thickness

Wet film thickness is the thickness of a liquid coating after it has been applied to a surface. It is important to measure wet film thickness to ensure that the correct amount of coating has been applied. Too much coating can lead to problems such as runs and sags, while too little coating can lead to poor adhesion and corrosion.

There are a number of ways to measure wet film thickness, including:

Dipsticks: Dipsticks are simple and inexpensive, but they are not very accurate.
Tape measures: Tape measures are more accurate than dipsticks, but they can be difficult to use on curved surfaces.
Gauges: Gauges are the most accurate way to measure wet film thickness, but they can be expensive.

Dry Film Thickness

Dry film thickness is the thickness of a liquid coating after it has dried. It is important to measure dry film thickness to ensure that the correct amount of coating has been applied and that the coating is adhering properly. Too much coating can lead to problems such as runs and sags, while too little coating can lead to poor adhesion and corrosion.

There are a number of ways to measure dry film thickness, including:

Magnetic gauges: Magnetic gauges are used for ferrous metals.
Ultrasonic gauges: Ultrasonic gauges are used for both ferrous and non-ferrous metals.
Thickness probes: Thickness probes are used for non-magnetic materials.

Defelsko

Defelsko is a company that manufactures a variety of coating thickness measuring instruments, gauges, and probes. Defelsko instruments are known for their accuracy and durability.

If you are looking for a coating thickness measuring instrument, Defelsko is a good option to consider. Defelsko offers a wide range of instruments to suit different needs and budgets.
