OVERVIEW

Two water tanks located in Dayton, Ohio required blast cleaning. The tanks had an internal surface area of 28,000 ft2 – with external surfaced of 45,000 ft2.

The tanks are supported by a large central riser column and 12 legs around the circumference. Access is via swing stages. Catwalk platforms are suspended between the columns.

RESULTS

We performed two tests on equally sized towers. The first test used coal slag and the client’s original equipment. The second test used GMA ToughBlast and two Mega Blasters with 1600cfm compressors.

CONCLUSION

By switching to GMA ToughBlast, our client used 44% less abrasive. Additionally, they saved almost 400 labor hours. Downtime during blasting was significantly reduced. This is due to minimal reloading of the Mega Blasters. Altogether, there was a total savings of 22%. Moreover, he was able to move the equipment on a week ahead of schedule to start the next project.

DUST SLOWS PRODUCTION AND WASTE MONEY

WAR ON DUST: ARE YOU BOLSTERING ENEMY RANKS?

Can you think of anything more annoying than dust? We can’t either. As annoying as mosquitos are, at least they feed frogs and bats. But dust? There’s absolutely nothing good about it. This is especially true for blasters and painters.

Here are some things we can probably all agree on:

Dust is a nuisance.

When blasting, it affects and interferes with surrounding tradesman, businesses, and communities. Everyone hates it. Generally, we have to pay to contain it.

Dust slows down your production.

  • Firstly, if a blaster can’t see through the dust, it slows down his production because he can’t monitor his progress with clarity.
  • Secondly, if there’s dust in the abrasive itself, it replaces and therefore reduces the abrasive particles that should be removing corrosion. With less abrasive particles, it’s going to take longer to clean the steel.

Dust is expensive.

And not because of the losses mentioned above. But also because you’re literally paying for it in each bag of abrasive. You are unknowingly giving dust the upper hand!

There are two simple tests you can conduct onsite to determine how much dust is in your abrasive.

1. DUMP INTO YOUR POT

Dump a fresh bag of abrasive your blast pot. Watch how much dust wafts into the air. If you can see a brown cloud hovering above the pot, you’re abrasive is dusty. This is costing you time and money.

2. SHAKER TEST

Scoop a sample of each abrasive into its own plastic container. Fill it with water. Seal the lids. Give them a healthy shake.

Being lighter, dust will find itself suspended in the water. The murkier the water, the more dust in the abrasive.
