Description

Sweep blasting is an abrasive blast cleaning method used to remove loose material and roughen the surface of a substrate prior to the application of a paint or coating. The term is derived from the method of using a fast pass, or light sweeping method. Also referred to as abrasive brush-off blast cleaning, the purpose is to deform, not remove galvanized metal.

The light sweeping pattern increases adhesion of the topcoat intended to cover the galvanized surface. This method is aggressive enough to clean and profile a surface, yet gentle enough to not remove excessive amounts of zinc.

This process is acknowledged by multiple standards, including the ASTM D6386, ASTM D7803 and as a preferred method for hot-dip galvanized surfaces.
