OVERVIEW
On January 26, 2021, GMD Shipyard, located in Brooklyn, New York, sought out our services for a quick turnaround. The job involved removing a 15-20 mils epoxy coating from a ship hull. This was all the more crucial as the project was on a strict timeline and required a rapid turn-around.
SET-UP
Given the scale of the project, we proposed an aggressive set-up: not one, but two VertiDrive units, each equipped with 2 #8 Hyper nozzles. Supporting the dual VertiDrives were two Mega Blast Pots, enhancing the blasting capabilities to effectively strip the ship hull’s coating. The abrasive of choice was GMA GX2 garnet, known for its superior performance.
RESULTS
The result was a notable spike in productivity. Over six hours, 2000 sq ft of the ship hull was blasted clean, resulting in a calculated productivity rate of 333 sq ft/hr. This significant improvement was achieved despite the initial use of UHP (Ultra High Pressure) being replaced due to excessive maintenance costs, as the water pumps kept failing. It’s also noteworthy that the team was blasting to an SP10, even though the specifications allowed for an SP6. This level of “overblasting” potentially slowed down the process, suggesting that the VertiDrive’s performance could have been even more impressive under different conditions.CONCLUSION
This case study offers a snapshot of the real-world efficiency the VertiDrive can bring to industrial blasting projects, even under tight timelines.
