On this particular site, traditional techniques posed a considerable challenge. The use of manlifts was strictly off the table, necessitating the construction of scaffolding around tanks just to commence the painting process—a setup that could take a month. With paint needing to be laboriously rolled on, two layers were essential to achieve the correct primer thickness. This further extended an already prolonged process. The occasional use of spray for the topcoat resulted in excessive overspray.
In the face of these constraints, Qlayers stepped in with its innovative 10Q robot, designed to revolutionize the coating process. This adept machine was engineered to apply the topcoat in a singular layer at remarkable speed, and its precision dramatically reduced overspray to a minimal 1%.
The 10Q wasn’t alone on this mission. It was partnered with a surface preparation robot, which, although slower, played a pivotal role. The modus operandi was set: the surface prep robot would devote two 23-hour days for thorough surface cleaning. Following this, the 10Q robot swung into action, applying the primer in a day and then seamlessly laying the topcoat on the subsequent day.
Throughout this period, the surface prep robot shifted focus to the next segment, ensuring a seamless transition and rhythm. This well-orchestrated dance not only catered to surface preparation needs but also managed potential issues like flash rust on the exposed steel, ticking all boxes for the client.
The 10Q robot’s prowess shone through. Delivering coating quality that was not just high-grade but also aligned perfectly with set standards, it earned the nod of approval from both the contractor and the asset owner. Even when faced with hindrances like delays from the blasting robot and occasional obstructions from other simultaneous operations, Qlayers’ commitment to excellence remained unyielding. The operation concluded with stellar efficiency, achieving results as delineated in the product datasheet:
- 13.7 mils (350 μm): Primer average wet layer thickness.
- 6 mils (150 μm): Topcoat average wet layer thickness.
- 1937 ft2/hr (180 m2/hr): Peak coating speed achieved.
