Blasting with Garnet Abrasive Media

Why is garnet so popular?

Arguably the most cost effective abrasive to use in 85% of the blasting projects in the world.

Contractors are using Garnet Blasting Media more and more these days. It is actually said to be the most cost effective abrasive for 85% of worldwide blasting projects. People who are using garnet correctly are crushing their competition.

Why?

  • Low dust = BlastOne’s Garnet is between 7.5-8.0 on the MOH Hardness Scale, resulting in fewer particles breaking off during impact.
  • Safety = Lower dust volumes compared to other abrasive media and avoiding hazardous blasting media keeps your workers safe.
  • Environmentally Friendly = especially when compared to Slags. There are none of the toxic substances in Garnet that are found in Slag.

Uses about half of the consumption of slag, meaning way less abrasive to clean up and dispose White metal blast is achieved easily without any surface contamination and many more reasons to choose the Blast-One GMA Garnet!

THE TRUE COST OF BLASTING

GMA GARNET VS SLAG DEMO
It is commonly agreed that garnet is the best abrasive to use. It releases hardly any dust and cleans extremely well. We also hear contractors say:

“IT’S JUST TOO EXPENSIVE TO USE”
As garnet can be up to six times the price of Slag, people make this assumption. Abrasive cost does not have a strong relationship with the end cost of the project. You will typically end up spending much more in the long run when working with the wrong abrasive.

Use this Garnet Cost Comparison Diagram to deeper understand how spending more money on a BlastOne Garnet Abrasive results in you spending way less on the other costs throughout a project that adds up. This will result in a lower cost in the end.

The beginning purchase of the Garnet Abrasive is higher than Slag, but you need to look at it as a long term investment. Plus, the cost of abrasive alone barely has an effect on the project as a whole.

QUESTIONS TO TAKE INTO CONSIDERATION WHEN CHOOSING YOUR ABRASIVE:
What delivery to site, and disposal will be required?
What will my blasting speed be with each abrasive?
What will my hourly consumption be with each abrasive?

THINGS TO CONSIDER:
Machine guns cost a lot more than bows and arrows, but the military wouldn’t go to war with bows and arrows, especially in this modern world.

Chainsaws cost a lot more than an axe, but arbor companies who strive to be profitable wouldn’t use an axe.

BlastOne created a tool to assist in calculating the cost of blasting media.

BUT DON’T TRY GARNET OUT ALONE!

Using Garnet will not automatically make you profits. Having experienced consultants help train you and your teams is key, just like most other new technologies. Purchasing garnet and putting it into your blast pot with no prior knowledge is a waste of your time and money.

Luckily, BlastOne is here to help! We have over 500 years of combined experience and have worked on a wide range of projects. Our Project Consultants will help increase profits for your project with GMA Garnet.

SURFACE PROFILE AND CLEANLINESS
PROFILE REQUIREMENTS
There are many coating failures that are due to too much profile or not enough profile. Contractors who use coal slag will create too much profile on the steel most of the time. Contractors are then applying extra primer, which reduces profits.

SURFACE CLEANLINESS
BlastOne Garnet leaves the surface extremely clean. When compared to Slag blasted surfaces, many slag particles remain on the surface after blasting, where that does not happen with BlastOne Garnet.
Slag particles are sharp and you can see the particles protruding through the paint coating. Garnet blasted surfaces are smooth.

WORKER ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
SLAG & DUST LEVELS
Slag is created when cold water is poured on it while it is red hot, which results in a brittle structure. The Slag particles break into pieces when impacting a surface, creating lots of dust.

The drift of debris and spent Slag travel around 120 ft versus just 40 feet on Garnet projects.

Garnet ranks high on the hardness scale and is 10 times or more recyclable. The pieces that do break off fall out of the air immediately. Your workers will thank you for switching to GMA Garnet!

HEAVY METAL CONTENT
With Garnet being a natural stone, there’s a very small amount of heavy minerals.

On the other hand, Slag contains many Toxic Heavy Metals. Authorities are in the process of banning slag due to the level of toxins in the material. Slag is also considered a hazardous waste, even before blasting. Make sure you are being safe when using Slag.
